So if you have listened to the Nerd Dome Podcast at all, you know i have an affinity for lists. I have alwys loved ranking things and then arguing the list until I am blue in the face. So I have decided to start compiling some of my lists here.
We will start with my top 5 favorite comic artists of all time. I’d like to start out and say Jack Kirby is NOT on my list, mostly because he is a very obvious choice for all comics fans. I mean they do not call him “The King” for nothing. So before you all jump on me for not having him on here just know, that I know, that he is the effin’ man!
5. Neil Adams

I had the pleasure of chatting with Neil Adams a few years back, and I am glad I did. He loved to talk and it was always fun hearing what he had to say. I always loved the detail that Neil Adams would put into his art, the cars, guns, grees, gadgets were all so detailed that it really brought the stories to life and made them super dynamic.
Sadly Neil passed away in 2022, but you can still grab his art from his site that is run by his family!

4. Esad Ribic

I first came across Esad Ribic’s art during his time on Thor God of thunder. I really love the painterly style of his work, I would say if falls more towards realistic vs more abstract and I love that. The way he drew the lightning as well as being able to capture Thor through multiple stages in his life was fantastic.
You can find some awesome original art from him here!

3. Chris Samnee

Chris Samnee will always have a special place for me. I became very familiar with his style while reading both the Rocketeer as well as Daredevil. His heavy inks really make me think of older Pulp comics/ Sliver Age comics, and I think that’s really what makes his work on something like the Rocketeer really stand out. He isn’t hyper detail oriented but his pencil work and inks MORE than make up for it!

2. David Mack

You will almost always know when you are looking at a piece done by David Mack. His watercolor style is unmatched in my opinion, and I have always loved the bits of abstract that he throws into is art. Sometimes its shapes, or bits of words but it is always so beautifully done. Fun story, my daughter has recently begun taking art classes and drawing superheroes. Her first project ended up looking like a David Mack lite drawing, and I couldn’t be more proud!

- Alex Ross

The art of Alex Ross is god tier. I have always loved that they look like real people, even to the extent that the uniforms bunch and fold in all of the areas that they would If I was wearing them. I always see his work and it makes me feel like I’m in the Golde/Sliver age of comics again. As you can see from the list I tend to lean more towards the painting style of comic art, and I think Alex Ross is king of that mountain. If you have not read Marvels or Kingdom Come, please do yourself a favor and do so!
